Magpie is a rural/residential area 6 km south of Ballarat. It is situated on the White Horse Range, east of the Yarrowee River. The township was created in 1850, after gold was found at Frenchmans Lead. The town is home to Magpie Primary School which has fewer than 100 students. It has a small population of approximately 371.
