Newington is a residential suburb immediately west of Ballarat central and south of Lake Wendouree. It was gazetted as a place name in 1998. Newington is notable for Victoria Park, Ballarat's largest open parkland which features numerous sporting grounds connected by grand avenues of conifers and oaks as well as some wetlands and lakes. Newington's northern boundary is the old Western Highway (Sturt Street). Two of its prestigious addresses in Sturt Street are the Uniting (formerly Presbyterian) church's Clarendon College (1864) and the Catholic St Patrick's College (1893). Both colleges take boarders. St Patrick's is boys only and Clarendon is co-educational. Directly to the East of Victoria Park is Russell Street, this iconic street offers choice residential properties with several newer homes backing this prestigious area. Apart from the park and schools, many of the homes are either Victorian or interwar styles, which are highly popular for investors with Newington’s fabulous inner-city location.
