Brown Hill is a suburb of Ballarat, on the eastern rural-urban fringe of the city, 5 kilometres east of the CBD. The suburb is located on a valley to the south and east of the Brown Hill range and Gong Gong and straddles both sides of the Western Freeway. Many schools lie within or are close to Brown Hill including: Woodman’s Hill Secondary College, Caledonian Primary School, Saint Francis Xavier College (a Catholic Prep - Year 6 Primary School) and the Brown Hill Kindergarten. Brown Hill has several sporting fields including Russell Square, along with a picturesque 18-hole Mount Xavier Golf Course in Ballarat East. The course is excellent in terms of variety with many holes going through thick pine trees and other holes in open undulating land. This suburb is almost entirely residential with large areas of open spaces including the fringe of the Monte Christo Bushland Reserve. The main strip provides locals with a milk bar, post office, petrol station, the Brown Hill Hotel, laundromat, and take-away stores. Brown Hill is serviced by the Ballarat bus service and has excellent connection with the Western Freeway.
